The Monegasque Committee of the World Energy Council is pleased and honoured to have been selected to organise the WEC Executive Assembly 2012.

The Committee would particularly like to thank the Monaco Tourist Office and Convention Authority for its help in organising and managing the logistical aspects of the event.

The meetings have taken place at the SEA CLUB Conference Centre, next to the MERIDIEN BEACH PLAZA Hotel (22 avenue Princesse Grace).

Participants may have choosen to stay at this hotel or at the NOVOTEL, both of which have offered specially negotiated rates.

A welcome desk was open for registrants in the foyer of the SEA CLUB as from 2 p.m. on Sunday 4th November. Name tags have been handed out.

Welcome desks have been set up at NICE COTE D’AZUR Airport from 4th to 6th November, and have provided information on the travel options available to Monaco.

All buffet lunches have been served at the Intempo Restaurant at the MERIDIEN Hotel, while the receptions at the end of the day have been hosted at the SEA CLUB, except for the closing dinner on Thursday 8th November, which was held in the Salle d’Or at the FAIRMONT Hotel, close to the centre of Monte Carlo.

In addition to the meetings organised by WEC’s headquarters, the Monegasque Committee has offered several other programmes and events, such as technical visits, guided tours in English for accompanying persons, a conference on the ITER project and the opportunity to take part in the Euromediterranean Energy Efficiency Forum which took place on 9th November.

The general programme and various sections of this site provide all the information and details you may wish regarding these arrangements.

Monte Carlo Executive Assembly – highlights and key takeaways

The WEC head office would like to say a big thank you to all those who joined us in Monaco last month for the 2012 Executive Assembly. It was a particularly full week with a diverse and ambitious programme. Highlights included Secretaries’ Strategy Day in which members received an exciting preview of the new WEC website; the Energy Trilemma Summit, a high-level dialogue on critical energy issues and challenges; the SE4ALL Group Meeting; an exclusive preview into WEC’s 2012 Issues Monitor publication, with analyses from our Regional Vice-Chairs; and special addresses from UNIDO’s Kandeh Yumkella and the IEA’s Fatih Birol. The event was well attended with participation from over 225 delegates and representation from 54 National Member Committees. The Executive Assembly Plenary provided the backdrop for a number of important decisions regarding the WEC’s governance and future events. Congratulations to Marie-José Nadeau (Canada) and Younghoon David Kim (South Korea) who have been elected as WEC Chair-elect and WEC Co-Chair-elect respectively. Both Ms Nadeau and Mr Kim will assume their formal roles of WEC Chair and Co-Chair after the 2013 Congress. The election of new Officers was also approved, and we are delighted to welcome Leonhard Birnbaum (Germany) as Vice Chair, Europe and Dr Taha Zatari (Saudi Arabia), as Vice Chair, Special Responsibility for Middle East and Gulf States. Brian Statham (South Africa) has been re-elected for a second term as Chair of the Studies Committee. Jean-Marie Dauger (France) and José da Costa Carvalho Neto (Brazil) take on Chair-elect roles for the Communications & Outreach and Programme Committee respectively. Future WEC events were also decided by the Executive Assembly. The Colombian Committee gave an excellent presentation in support of their bid to host the 2014 Executive Assembly in Cartagena, Colombia. The site of the 2016 Congress was also determined, and, following a close vote from members, Istanbul clinched the majority over Abu Dhabi. Our sincere congratulations go out to the Turkish National Committee whose delegation was led by Deputy Minister for Energy and Natural Resources, Mr Hasan Murat Mercan and the Chair of the Turkish Committee, Mr Süreyya Yücel Özden. We would like to thank both the UAE and the Turkish Committee for the quality and professionalism of their bids.

We have received some excellent feedback from you following the EA and we hope that you enjoyed the meetings as much as us. Thanks to you all for your commitment and contributions, you really helped to make this year’s event a success.
