ITER Conference (thursday 8th at 10h30)
The presentation will highlight the environmental aspects of ITER and also review the current status of the ITER project.
Fusion has the potential to play an important role as part of a future energy mix for our planet. It has the capacity to produce energy on a large scale, using plentiful fuels, and releasing no carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases. ITER is an important step on the road to fusion power plants; in Cadarache, Southern France, the project is being planned with great respect for the local environment, in keeping with the aim of producing an environmentally benign form of energy.
Construction is rapidly progressing on the ITER platform in Cadarache, and factories in China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the USA have begun manufacturing the machine’s components.
A visit to the ITER site these days conveys the true feeling that the project has now entered a decisive phase in its history.
Last February, the Poloidal Field Coils Winding Facility, where the largest of the ITER coils will be assembled, was handed over by the construction consortium to the European Domestic Agency Fusion for Energy. It will soon be fitted out with the necessary tools and equipment.
On 6 October we have started moving to the new Headquarters building, where 500 staff will have their office. It will be officially inaugurated on 17 January 2013.
In less than two years, arriving from all parts of the world, the first loads will be delivered to the ITER site in Cadarache and Tokamak assembly will begin.
Risks of schedule delay and cost increase were the biggest challenges of ITER project since the real construction has started in July 2010 when ITER was coming back to the right track, though we experienced Japanese earthquake and tsunami last year. Now schedule recovery is the most important issue now.
The Management Advisory Committee was held in Cadarache late October for discussing the strategy to keep the project on schedule and avoid future slippages. Now ITER Organization and Domestic Agencies create a ‘Unique ITER Team’ for enhancing further integration for the success of the ITER project.

Policy-makers, NGOs and business leaders are encouraged to participate in an open dialogue that expresses national and worldwide views on energy efficiency and the resulting impact on the environment, national security and economic growth. With the emphasis on efficient use of our energy resources, the Forum helps:
Elevate the understanding of energy efficiency issues in political debate;
Identify the repercussions on businesses.
